Photo by Matteo De Mayda for New York Times of Cosima Montavoci in her Atelier.
Cosima Montavoci was born in Venice in 1988, and after a decade spent in the Netherlands where she graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. From 2015 to 2018, her atelier has been located at the NDSM Werf, Amsterdam Noord. In 2018 Cosima chose to go back to Italy and is now based in Venice.
Since 2022 together with Lorenzo Passi, Cosima founded the Mollified Collective, That through the lens of glass casts an anthropologically ironic look at human behavior.
Cosima Montavoci's work often speaks of major existential themes such as death, creation, and memory. She loves to research and investigate small forgotten things that people often do not see or talk about, elements that she defines as "human traces" or "honest fossils." The main feature of her work is to encourage acceptance and metabolization of difficult situations or topics through an ironic attitude that accompanies each of her creations. Cosima Montavoci thinks that her own hands help her to think and, for this reason, the manual component is a very evident feature of her works.
