Trash Project Venice

Trash Project began with the necessity of creating an honest fossil that represents our times, the trash tells an authentic story, no frills or facades.

Often, when speaking about our city we put up facades, almost like postcards of monuments, when something like trash reveals an intimate reality, different in each city.

Cosima Montavoci is based in Venice, therefore this work is always work in progress and expanding as she keeps on collecting every day.

Venice specifically, is a place where people don’t only throw away things on the ground, but where people lose things while walking, babies lose thing from the stroller, locals lose things from their trolleys, or from laundry cords, tourists from all over the world lose things that come originally from so different places and by continuously collecting trash, gives the opportunity to the artist to define seasonality of trash.

In the Presentation of this Project in the exhibition ‘Scent of time’ at Edge, the foundation in Dhaka, Bangladesh and for the 15th Italian Contemporary Art Day, the artist isolated 2 compositions of trash encased into resin together with some specific sounds from Venice, to bring this intimate feeling of knowing a city to Bangladesh.

Although this project did not start as environmental it became related to the plastic pollution as the artist did not feel like ‘ignoring the elephant in the room’ and after she kept on finding plastic on the ground and in the water she decided to donate 20 % of the earnings from each work sold to clean the city where the trash comes from.
